WLAX v Stanford (3 APR 15) - Highlights
DENVER-- The University of Denver women's lacrosse team suffered a rare conference defeat, Friday afternoon, as the Pioneers lost to the Stanford Cardinal 14-7 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The loss snapped a 17-game conference winning streak dating back to April 21, 2012.
The Cardinal struck first on Friday as Kelly Myers found the back of the net in the opening minute of play to give Stanford an early 1-0 lead. Lucy Dikeou scored a moment later to put the visitors up by a pair.
Stanford (6-2, 2-0 MPSF) stretched its lead to three on an unassisted goal by Alexandra Crerend and added another just minutes later after a goal by Alex Poplawski.
DU freshman Katherine Fischer (Upper Nyack, NY) got the Pioneers (6-3, 1-1 MPSF) on the board with an unassisted goal to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-1.
Stanford quickly answered back as Dikeou scored her second goal of the day to extend the Cardinal lead back to four.
The Cardinal proceeded to go on a 6-0 run which amounted to a 10-1 lead shortly before halftime.
With seconds remaining in the first half, Denver's Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) scored an unassisted goal to make the halftime score 10-2.
The Cardinal started the second half on a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 14-2 but Denver's Rachael Dillon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) scored two quick goals and redshirt freshman, Nicole Martindale (Brooklyn, Ontario), added a goal shortly after to make the score 14-5.
Dillon's third goal of the half and another Martindale goal to follow put Denver on a 5-0 run and made the score 14-7.
"I'm proud of the team for the way we fought until the end," head coach Liza Kelly said. "Stanford is an excellent team that was coming off of a tough loss to Cornell so I knew they'd come out strong. I wish we had another ten minutes in this game."
Denver wraps up a seven-game home stand on Sunday afternoon versus UC Davis (1:00 p.m. MT).
Notes: Denver lost senior defender Ali Proehl (San Diego, Calif.) to injury in the first minute of the game. Jill Remenapp (Woodbrine, Md.) added an assist moving her career point total to 271, putting her one point behind former Pioneer Kara Secora for first all-time on the DU scoring list.
For the second-consecutive season, Denver will host the MPSF Championship from April 30-May 3 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Tickets to this event are currently available for purchase at the University of Denver ticket office.
