Pioneers Defeat Brown in Low-Scoring Affair

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.) led the Pioneers with two goals in a 5-3 victory at Brown Saturday. Denver now holds a 2-2 record on the season, with a 1-1 mark in the MPSF.

The Pioneers took an early lead over the Bears with a goal from Caitlin Derry (Seal Beach, Calif.) 4:15 into the game. Reese added to the Denver score with a goal 4:04 later. Brown got on the board halfway through the first half before DU closed out the scoring with a free position goal from Kendra Lanuza (Littleton, Colo.). The Pioneers carried a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Denver performed better in multiple areas in the first half. The Pioneers won all five draw controls, with freshman Elizabeth Behrins (Basking Ridge, N.J.) winning three consecutive draws. Denver also caused four turnovers and picked up 13 groundballs, five more than Brown. Denver took 13 shots in the first half to Brown's four shots. Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) made two first-half saves, while Brown's Victoria Holland saved six shots in the first half.

Denver and Brown split the scoring in the second half, with each team tallying two goals. Casey White (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the second half, before Brown's Lauren Toy recorded her sixth of the season less than two minutes later. The Pioneers scored the third goal in the first 10 minutes on a man-up opportunity; Reese scored an unassisted goal, her second of the game and seventh of the season. Toy scored her second goal of the game for the final score of 5-3 with 5:39 remaining in the game.

Stevenson finished the game with five saves and a 0.625 save percentage. Denver caused 12 turnovers in the game with defenders Layne Voorhees (Alexandria, Va.) and Sybil Pallace (Baltimore, Md.) tallying three caused turnovers apiece. Voorhees also led the Pioneers with five groundballs.

The Pioneers will return home to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for a three-game homestand to begin their March slate. Denver will host [RV] James Madison Saturday, March 5 at 12 p.m. MT.
