Pioneers Fall to Dartmouth 8-6 in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell to Dartmouth 8-6 Sunday at McAlister Field in Los Angeles, Calif. Denver is 3-5 on the season and holds a 1-1 record in the MPSF.

Denver played Dartmouth to an even 4-4 score at halftime. The Pioneers held the advantage in shots, groundballs and saves at the half. Dartmouth performed better in the draw control circle, winning six draws to DU's three.

Senior captain Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.) kicked off the scoring 0:44 into the game as she finished an assist from Caitlin Derry (Seal Beach, Calif.) for the sixth time this season. Less than five minutes later, Dartmouth tied the score 1-1 with an unassisted goal.

The Pioneers notched back-to-back goal to take a 3-1 lead over the Big Green. Freshman Elizabeth Behrins (Basking Ridge, N.J.) tallied her first goal of the game with 12:34 remaining in the first half before senior captain Sarah Kasun (Bel Air, Md.) scored off an assist from Molly Danko (Baltimore, Md.), for Danko's first point of the season.

Dartmouth embarked on a three-goal run 0:14 later, linking together two unassisted and one free position goal for the 4-3 lead with 8:54 to play in the first half. Casey White (Queensbury, N.Y.) tied the score 4-4 with 0:12 left in the first half.

Dartmouth worked out to an 8-4 lead in the second half, with leading scorer Jaclyn Leto recording two goals to close out the 4-0 run for the Big Green.

Behrins stopped the bleeding with a goal with 7:58 remaining in the game, scoring a career-high two goals in back-to-back games and ending the 22:14 scoring drought for the Pioneers. Riley Eggeman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored her first career goal with 2:10 to play for the final score of 8-6.

The Pioneers finished with three more shots than Dartmouth, 18 to 15, and four more groundballs, 18 to 14. Denver also performed better in the clearing game, completing 12-of-13 clears. Goalie Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished with six saves in the game.

Denver will return home to host Marist and Marquette this week. The Pioneers will take on Marist Wednesday, March 23 at 12 p.m. MT in a midweek game that will be streamed on Pioneer Vision before hosting Marquette Saturday, March 26 at 11:30 a.m. MT.
