Summit League Release
TEMPE, Ariz. - Denver's men's and women's tennis teams combined for four Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional awards, the ITA announced today. The ITA's 2015-16 award winners were selected by an awards committee comprised of coaches in each region.
Summit League Coach of the Year Christian Thompson was selected as the women's Mountain Region Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year. League Newcomer of the Year, Bianca Mok (Boise, Idaho), was tabbed as ITA Mountain Region Rookie of the Year.
Thompson guided the Pioneers to a perfect 6-0 Summit League record and both the regular season and tournament championships. Denver enters the NCAA Tournament with a No. 48 ITA national ranking and a 21-2 overall record that will set a new Summit League record for season winning percentage.
Mok compiled identical 6-0 records during Summit League singles and doubles matches during her freshman season. She enters the NCAA Tournament with a 19-2 overall singles record during the spring dual season.
Pioneers assistant coach Drew Eberly was named the men's Mountain Region ITA Assistant Coach of the Year. All-Summit League selection Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) received the ITA's Senior Player of the Year honor.
Eberly, in his second season as assistant coach, helped guide Denver to a No. 47 national ranking and a an 18-7 overall record entering the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers compiled a 5-0 record during Summit League play on their way to regular season and tournament crowns.
Craig, The Summit League's Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015, went unbeaten during Summit League play in both singles and doubles matches. He enters the NCAA Tournament with a 16-7 overall record, including a 13-5 mark at No. 1 singles.
National ITA award winners for Division I will be announced on Tuesday, May 24.
Both the Pioneer men's and women's teams won their third consecutive Summit League regular season and tournament championships this season. Denver is the first league school to win three straight men's and women's tennis titles concurrently.
The DU men's will face Mississippi in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 14 in Berkeley, Calif. The women meet Texas A&M in the first round of NCAA Tournament play on Friday, May 13 at Stanford, Calif.
