Aug. 7, 2016 DENVER - University of Denver gymnastics alumna Jessica Lopez will compete for Olympic medals after advancing to the all-around and uneven bars individual finals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Lopez, who represents Venezuela and graduated from DU in 2009, tallied a 56.932 all-around total to finish No. 14 overall. The top 24 athletes (maximum two per country) advance to the all-around finals, set for Thursday, August 11.
Her top score during Sunday's qualification meet was a 15.333 on uneven bars, earning her a No. 7 finish on the event. The top eight qualifiers (maximum two per country) advance to the event finals.
The 2016 Games are Lopez's third Olympics, competing in London in 2012 and Beijing in 2008. She also advanced to the all-around final in 2012, finishing No. 18 overall with a 55.500. This will be her first Olympic event final.
Lopez is one of two DU Gymnastics alumnae to compete at the Rio Games. Simona Castro represented Chile during Sunday's qualifying meet, scoring a 51.399 in the all-around and finishing No. 52 overall. Castro is competing at the Olympics for the second time in her career, doing so four years ago in London as well.
Fans can watch Lopez compete in the all-around on Thursday, August 11, beginning at 1 p.m. MT on NBCOlympics.com. The competition will air nationally on NBC on tape delay beginning at 7 p.m. The uneven bars event final will be held at 11 a.m. MT on Sunday, August 14, also on NBCOlympics.com.
The 2017 DU Gymnastics team opens its home season on January 14, and fans can save on tickets to two of the Pioneers' home meets during DU's Olympic tickets promotions. Until August 21, fans can purchase a four-pack of tickets to the February 26 meet for only $16. Depending on how the United States women's gymnastics team does in Rio, DU fans will also have the chance to save on tickets to the February 26 and March 4 meets.
Season tickets are now on sale for the 2017 season.
