MILWAUKEE- The Denver Pioneers used a pair of 5-0 runs to defeat the Marquette Golden Eagles by a score of 17-11 on Wednesday afternoon in the Valley Dome.
With the win, DU moved to 10-4 on the season and 5-2 in the BIG EAST, while handing Marquette its first home loss of the season. The Golden Eagles fell to 9-6 on the season and recorded their second-straight loss in the BIG EAST to drop to 5-2 in the conference.
Quintin Hoch-Bullen paced the Pioneers with five goals in the contest, while Kendra Lanuza had a team-high six points off one goal and a game-high five assists. The junior attacker's five assists tied a career-high. Senior captain Caitlin Derry registered her second hat trick in three games with three goals, and was also credited with an assist for a total of four points in the game.
Nine different players scored a goal for DU, with Eliza Radochonski and Julia Feiss recording two each and Lanuza, Elizabeth Behrins, Caroline Wiseman, Riley Eggeman and Audrey Schreck netting one apiece.
Schreck had a game-high three caused turnovers to go with her goal, Kennedy Milburn picked up four ground balls and Molly Little led the team with four draw controls.
In net, Carson Gregg made seven saves, including the 100th save of her career in the second half, while also recording two ground balls and one caused turnover, playing all but 1:19 in the cage. Amelia Cole made a brief appearance and allowed one goal.
The Pioneers had a 31-24 shot advantage in the contest, 23-18 in shots on goal, and also had the edge in clears at 22-of-26 (Marquette was 11-of-14). Marquette held a 22-8 margin in draw controls, as well as 21-19 in ground balls. Both teams had nine caused turnovers.
DU also had fewer turnovers on the afternoon, with Marquette committing 21 in the contest, including 16 in the first half, compared to 13 for Denver.
Denver fell behind early as Marquette opened the game with the first two goals, scoring a free-position goal (28:22) and an unassisted goal by Grace Gabriel (22:58). The Denver defense held Gabriel, the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles, to just one goal in the game.
The Pioneers had three free-position attempts within the first five minutes of action, but were unable to get a shot past the Marquette goalkeeper Jules Horning.
Lanuza got the visitors on the board with an unassisted goal (21:15), but the Golden Eagles got it back with a goal at 19:26 to push the lead back to two.
Wiseman scored her fifth goal of the season on a free-position goal at the 17:29 mark, however, 12 seconds later Marquette tallied its fourth goal of the game.
Denver pulled back to within one after a Derry free-position goal that sneaked past the Marquette goalkeeper (13:30). Marquette pushed the lead back to two at 9:38, but Denver proceeded to score the next five goals to tie and take its first lead of the game.
Hoch-Bullen got it back to a one-goal game with her first goal on a feed from Lanuza with 8:49 to play in the first half and Behrins tied the game 1:28 later on a feed from Lanuza off of a cut, going low for the goal (7:21).
DU went on to score the next three goals of the game, with Schreck tallying her first goal of the season after causing a turnover and picking up the ground ball on a failed Marquette clear to lead to a fastbreak opportunity, giving Denver its first lead (5:33). Derry got her second goal of the half on an unassisted goal with 1:46 to play and Hoch-Bullen scoring her second goal of the half on a Radochonski assist 42 seconds later. Marquette ended the run with the final goal of the half with 26 seconds remaining on a free-position goal, but Denver led 8-6 at the break.
The second half began with Marquette and Denver alternating goals in the first three minutes.
After Marquette opened the half with a goal (27:56), Derry notched the hat trick with her 12th goal of the season on an assist from Behrins 30 seconds later.
Back-to-back goals by Marquette evened the score at nine, to which Denver's Eggeman answered with her first goal of the game (22:01) to give DU the lead for good.
Eggeman's goal was the start of a 5-0 run to gain its largest lead of the game to that point at 14-9. Hoch-Bullen earned a hat trick on Lanuza's third assist of the game with 20:48 to play, and Radochonski scored back-to-back goals 51 seconds apart (19:17 and 18:26) to push the lead to 13-9. Feiss made it 26 games with a goal off of an Eggeman feed at 16:04, which was the 35th goal of the season for the junior attacker.
The Golden Eagles ended the run with an unassisted goal at the 15:43 mark and would add a final goal 11:31 later to get as close as 14-11.
Denver's last three goals came on empty net, as Marquette pulled its goalie out as another defender. Hoch-Bullen scored back-to-back goals with 2:27 and 1:03 remaining, respectively, and Feiss added an unassisted goal with 11 seconds left to give Denver the 17-11 victory.
UP NEXT: Denver hosts the [6/9] Florida Gators on Saturday, April 21 at noon. Saturday's game will also be the last home game of the regular season, in which we will honor our seniors. With two games remaining on the regular season schedule, Denver sits in a tie for third with Marquette, but now holds the head-to-head advantage.
