Denver Gymnastics Captures Four Regional Awards

April 8, 2018

DENVER - The University of Denver captured at least a share of all four North Central Region gymnastics awards, the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women announced Saturday night following the NCAA Regional competition in Minneapolis.

Sophomore Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) won her second-consecutive regional Gymnast of the Year award. Karr became the first DU gymnast to finish the regular season nationally-ranked on all four events and the all-around, and finished with four regular season All-American nods. She posted numerous scores in the top-10 in program history across multiple events this season including the second-highest all-around score (39.750).

A DU gymnast has now earned the North Central Gymnast of the Year honor three years running with Nina McGee doing so in 2016 and Karr in 2017.

Head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart, too, took home the Head Coach of the Year honor for the second straight season. Under her leadership, Denver tied the third-highest score in program history (197.300) and the program's third-highest RQS (196.785). As the team's primary beam coach, she helped the team to three of the program's highest scores including the third-best score in school history (49.425). DU saw three beam scores of 9.950 this season, which ties the fifth-highest score in program history.

Kutcher-Rinehart has now been named regional Head Coach of the Year three times (2017, 2007).

Associate head coach Linas Gaveika and assistant coach Jay Hogue earned a share of the Assistant Coach(es) of the Year award. Joining Gaveika and Hogue were BYU's Brogan Evanson and Air Force's Jen Langley and Josh Nilson.

Gaveika, the team's primary bars coach, helped lead the team to a new program record on bars (49.475) and five of the program's top 10 bars marks-all five accomplished at road meets. DU had three marks of 9.950 on bars this year, which ties the seventh-highest score in program history. Denver finished 2018 ranked No. 6 in the nation on bars, which is a new school record.

Hogue, who leads the team on vault and floor, led DU to a highly successful season despite competing with only five student-athletes on both events for the first half of the season. He helped Karr to a near-perfect 9.975 on vault, which ties the seventh-highest score in program history. DU achieved a No. 2 national ranking on vault, which set a new school record.

This is Gaveika's second regional co-Assistant Coach of the Year award (2011 with Iowa) and Hogue's third (2012 with Denver, 2014 with Georgia).

Director of athletics Ron Grahame was named the Administrator of the Year, making it two straight years that DU has won the award after Peg Bradley-Doppes did so in 2017. Grahame was named the day-to-day athletic director in August after Bradley-Doppes announced her retirement.

Denver joins Utah, Minnesota, BYU, Southern Utah Iowa, Iowa State, Utah State and Air Force as the Division I teams in the North Central Region. The regional awards are voted on by each institution's head coach.
