MALIBU, CALIF. - In a battle that went to the final match, the University of Denver's women tennis team succumbed to #18 Kansas, 4-3 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on the campus of Pepperdine University on Friday.

The Pioneers started the match well, securing the doubles point with two quick wins. At No. 2 doubles, Anna Riedmiller and Hada Chang polished off KU's Janet Koch and Amber Policare, 6-1. At three doubles, Bianca Mok and Camille Verden-Anderson beat Despoina Vogasari and Maria Ribes, 7-5.

In singles play, Riedmiller carded the first win at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4 over Policare.

Mok earned the next win at No. 3 singles, scoring a thrilling three-setter 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, beating out Koch.

Meanwhile, #62 Julia O'Loughlin lost in a close battle at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 5-7 to #63 Vogasari. Chang took only five games from Nina Khmelnitckaia, 5-7, 0-6. Arisha Ladhani also fell in close action, 6-7, 4-6 to the Jayhawk Tatiana Nikolaeva.

In the deciding match, Verden-Anderson took Ribes to three sets, but couldn't close it out, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6.
