Denver Sweeps Seventh-Straight Summit League Titles

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs won their seventh-consecutive Summit League Championships presented by the United States Air Force Special Operations on Saturday night at the Midco Aquatic Center.

Denver extended its streak to 152 event wins in the last 154 swimming events at the Summit League Championships (men's 100 IM didn't have a Denver swimmer, DQd relay for leaving early in 2019).

Denver opened the final day of competition with a sweep of the podium of both the men's and women's mile races. Andi Johnston (Fort Collins, Colo.) won the women's race for the second-straight season with a time of 16:53.51. Angie Lindsay (Beaverton, Ore.) took second in 17:08.59 and Izzy Smith (Leawood, Kan.) reached the final wall in 17:21.87 to finish third. On the men's side Riley Babson (Vail, Ariz.) won a tight race (15:28.91) that saw the top three swimmers in the mile separated by only 0.12 seconds. Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) reached the wall second and Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) took third. Nathan Rock (Boulder, Colo.) rounded out the quartet in the top-four of the event with a 15:46.26.

Sammy Walker (Los Gatos, Calif.) completed a sweep of the 1 and 3-meter boards with her school-record score of 320.15, breaking Hannah Duckett's 2005 mark. Kylie Katsuyoshi (Morgan Hill, Calif.) reached another diving podium for the Pioneers, taking third with a 272.40.

"I'm impressed with our women on the 3-meter board today," diving coach Aaron D'Addario said. "They were both consistent and confident throughout the prelims and bought full into the process. Their hard work and dedication paid off. I'm so proud of how hard our divers worked throughout the season. They came together and were rewarded with seven of eight podiums this week. We also had five personal best scores and four zone cuts this weekend. I'm very proud of the group."

Back to the swimming portion of the meet, Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) won the women's 100 IM with her time of 56.79. The Pioneers did not have a swimmer compete in the men's race.

In the 200 back, the Denver women swept the podium once again, while the Pioneer men took the top two spots. Natalie Arky (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) won the race with a 1:55.55, while Sofia Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) took second in 2:00.48 and Livi Schmid (Fairfax Station, Va.) finished third in a time of 2:00.57. The men's race saw Patrick Groters (Santa Cruz, Aruba) reach the wall first with a time of 1:42.20, followed by Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) and his time of 1:46.69.

Denver's sprint freestylers ended the individual portion of their championship with a sweep of the women's podium and the top four spots in the men's race. Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) broke the Summit League Championship record with his time of 42.63. Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.) took second in 42.72. Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) reached the wall in third in 44.28 and Darragh Mahns (Missoula, Mont.) took fourth with a 44.56. On the women's side, Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) won her second-consecutive women's 100 free with a 50.57. Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) took second in 50.85 and Erika Remington (Cedarburg, Wis.) completed the podium sweep with a time of 51.25.

Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas) broke his own DU record and the Summit League Championship record in the 200 breast to lead the Pioneers breaststrokers one final time this weekend. Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) won the women's race with a 2:15.65, Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) finished second in 2:16.57, Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.) finished fourth with a 2:17.98 and Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) took fifth with a 2:19.59.
