Brown Named Region 2 Gymnast of the Year

Denver senior captures first regional award of her career

DENVER – University of Denver gymnast Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) was named the Region 2 Gymnast of the Year, the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association announced on Tuesday.

The DU senior returned from a season-ending Achilles injury in 2020 with one of the most successfully seasons in Denver history. She became the new program record holder for top all-around score (39.825) and has scored a perfect 10.0 three times – including twice in the same meet during the NCAA Regional Final on April 3. She set or tied career highs on all four events – each at least 9.950 – this year and totaled eight scores of at least 9.975 across three of the events.

Including her Athens Regional floor title, she has won at least one title in every meet in 2021. Her career haul is now 63, which is tied for fourth-most in DU history.

As the Big 12 co-Gymnast of the Year and the Big 12 All-Around Champion, Brown earned the first of her two perfect 10.0s on bars this season at the Big 12 Championship, helping lead DU to an upset victory over No. 1 Oklahoma for Denver's first-ever Big 12 team title.

Brown finished the season tied for No. 2 in the country in the all-around with a final NQS of 39.756 – both Denver records. She also became the first gymnast in DU history to enter NCAA Regionals ranked in the top three in three events, adding a No. 2 ranking on bars and No. 3 on floor.

In the Region 2 rankings, Brown was tied atop the all-around standings with fellow AAI Award finalist Lexy Ramler. She led the region in the bars and floor rankings, was tied for No. 5 on vault and tied for No. 8 on beam.

This is the first regional award of Brown's career. A Denver student-athlete has now won regional Gymnast of the Year honors in five of the last six years: Nina McGee (2016) and Maddie Karr (2017, 2018, 2019).

Regional awards are determined by a coaches' vote. Denver is a member of Region 2, along with Air Force, BYU, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Utah and Utah State.

Next up, Brown will represent the University of Denver gymnastics team, presented by Your Front Range Toyota Stores, at the 2021 NCAA National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships as an individual all-around qualifier. She will compete in Semifinal I on Friday, April 16, where she will contend for individual national titles and seek to defend her NCAA floor title from 2019.
