Glover scores twice, adds an assist in Denver’s 4-2 win on Sunday
Glover had the match's first and final goals, getting on the board in the ninth minute and the 67th minute while also assisting on a first-half goal from graduate student Sami Feller. Junior defender Addisyn Hyrup scored the game winner less than five minutes into the second half, launching the ball into the upper left corner and out of reach of the South Dakota keeper.
COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "I felt that we had a good game plan going in and executed it. We really did a nice job at possessing the ball, and we had some really good, dynamic runs and passing that created some goals. But against a team that's as well coached as them and that can do a really good job at counterattacking, we switched off twice, and they punished us both times. At halftime, we talked about that there wasn't really a lot tactical that we had to change. We just had to remind them that you can't shut off when you're playing a team like this.
"On the second goal, everybody's finishing position when the goal went in was absolutely ideal of how we train it, so seeing them be able to get it and understand it against a really good opponent on the road was pretty gratifying."
SIGNIFICANT STATS:
- Glover now owns two multi-goal games in her career, Sunday's being her first since scoring a hat trick at North Dakota State on October 24, 2021.
- Hyrup's game winner was just the second goal of her career, both coming on road matches in Summit League play (October 22, 2021, at North Dakota).
- A season-high seven Pioneers came away with at least one point on the day.
- Junior Vanessa Murray had three shots on Sunday, equaling her career best that was also set against South Dakota on February 26, 2021.
- DU's 16 shots were its second most in a match this season with eight shots in each half. Denver outshot South Dakota 16-5 (7-3 on target) and also led in corners (6-1).
9' | Sophomore Riley Baker played up the right side and sent a cross into the center of the box where Glover got a foot on the ball and pushed it in for the early DU lead.
13' | USD tied up the match after redshirt senior Nerea Arrazola made the initial diving save, but Ashby Johnston found the rebound and scored.
17' | Junior Jordan Crockett played a cross into the box. Glover tapped it to the left to Feller, who buried the ball in the left corner of the net.
22' | Murray got a shot off through traffic, but USD's Caroline Lewis made the save.
31' | Senior Hannah Gallegos stepped back on the goal line and made a save for DU, but USD's Joana Zanin capitalized on the rebound to even things up at 2-2.
40' | After a couple attempts to get the ball toward the net from the left side, sophomore Jadyn Goodrich crossed it up and in toward Glover, who put too much air under it and sent it high.
45' | USD took a free kick deep in the DU zone and played it near Arrazola's net in the final 20 seconds of play, but graduate student Devan McSwain cleared the ball to send the match to halftime.
SECOND HALF:
50' | Hyrup reclaimed the lead again for Denver early in the second half, rocketing the ball past the USD keeper in the upper left corner off a feed from McSwain.
