Davis' Journey to Senior Day

Since his arrival as a transfer in the fall of 2019, James Davis has been a key member of the Pioneers tennis team in both the singles and doubles line-ups. He began the first two years of his career playing mainly at #3 singles and #1 doubles with partner and fellow Brit Matt Summers. During these years Davis became a dependable winner for the Pioneers, being named in the All-Summit League First Team as a sophomore and achieving an unbeaten singles season as a junior. During his junior year he was also crowned the mountain regional doubles champion, a title he would later defend with Summers as seniors.

From his arrival at Denver, Davis was always very committed to his tennis and overall development with countless hours of extra training both in the weight room and on the court being put in, allowing him to reconstruct both his body and game. This work and commitment lead to Davis being a vastly improved player for his final two years at Denver. These years saw him take a jump to being one of the best performers for the Pioneers individually with a singles national ranking of #74, a national doubles ranking of #19, a ranking of #1 within the mountain region for both singles and doubles. Furthermore, he was able to compete in the singles main draw of the All-American Championships, the Fall National Championships, and the NCAA National Championship Tournament. These achievements have placed Davis in an exclusive club of Pioneers who have been able to reach this level, the level, which is considered to be, the highest level of competition within college tennis. Cementing his status as one of the highest achieving players in the program history with a career total of over 90 career singles wins and over 70 doubles win.

This individual success was also mirrored in the overall success for the team. During his career at Denver, Davis has been integral in the Pioneers most successful period in program history, leading the team from #1 singles as they made an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021, alongside 3 Summit League regular season championships and one Summit League Tournament win with one still to play for. He has been a key leader within the culture of the team with his hard work and self-confidence on the court helping to create a hardworking and winning culture within the team.

Beyond college, Davis plans to turn pro and pursue a career in professional tennis, a career which has been his dream and goals since he began playing tennis almost 20 years ago. This career will give him the chance to test his game against some of the best players from all around the world and keep giving him opportunities to grow and develop as a player and a person.

Davis will be remembered within the program as someone with an undoubted winning mentality and self-confidence. This however will be twinned with his diligence, work ethic and willingness to always help his teammates to the best of his abilities.
