Miko Matikka Repeats as NCHC Rookie of the Week

Denver hockey forward is on a five-game goal streak and six-game point streak

DENVER – Denver Pioneers hockey forward Miko Matikka repeated as the NCHC Rookie of the Week, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday.

Matikka continued his hot stretch after earning his first career weekly honor on Nov. 13, as he extended his goal streak to five games and point streak to six games. He combined for three points in DU's series split against Omaha, recording his second career multi-point outing with a goal and assist on Friday before tallying again on Sunday.

The Helsinki, Finland, native now eight points in 12 games this season and his six goals on the year are third on the squad. His five-game goal streak is tied for the longest of the season by a Denver player, as Carter King also had a five-game run from Oct. 28-Nov. 11. Dylan Gambrell was the last Pioneer to have a goal in six consecutive games as he went on a seven-game run from Feb. 13-March 5, 2016 (8g/14a).

This is DU's seventh weekly award from the conference this season and its fourth rookie of the week honor. Denver has had a player pick up the top rookie accolade each of the last four weeks with Boston Buckberger on Oct. 30, Freddie Halyk on Nov. 6 and Matikka on Nov. 13. Magnus Chrona was the last Pioneer to repeat as an NCHC weekly award winner after being named Goaltender of the Week on Jan. 17, 2022 and Jan. 24, 2022.

Western Michigan had two honorees as Luke Grainger was named Forward of the Week and Cameron Rowe was recognized as Goaltender of the Week. North Dakota's Bennett Zmolek was selected as Defenseman of the Week.

Sophomore Rieger Lorenz was a finalist for Forward of the Week while freshman Zeev Buium was up for Defenseman of the Week.
