No. 4 Denver Closes Road Swing at No. 21 Jacksonville Wednesday

The Pioneers and Dolphins will square off Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. MT

DENVER – The No. 4 Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team closes out its spring break trip at No. 21 Jacksonville on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET/11 a.m. MT. Wednesday's game at Rock Stadium will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Denver is coming off its second top-five win of the season, a 13-8 victory over then-No. 4 Boston College on Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville. Hat tricks from Ellie Curry and Raegan Wilson paced the Pioneers offense, which got out to leads of 6-0 and 8-1 in the early going. Denver's defense held another top-team under nine goals, holding Boston College nearly seven goals below its average. Ellie Curry and Bryn McCaughey earned BIG EAST Midfielder and Defensive Player of the Week honors for their performances in Denver's 2-0 week.

The Pioneers enter another week as the top ranked scoring defense in the country at 5.62 goals per game. Denver is also first in caused turnovers per game at 12.44. DU has double digit caused turnovers in each of its first nine games this season, short of only the 11-straight games to start the 2021 campaign.

Wednesday's match-up also has some NCAA Tournament history with the Pios bouncing the Dolphins in both the 2013 and 2014 NCAA First Rounds in Gainesville, Fla. Denver leads the series 2-1, but Jacksonville won the only previous meeting on its campus by a count of 10-7 in February of 2011.

Jacksonville enters Wednesday's matinee at 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic Sun. The Dolphins have home wins this season over Stanford, Penn and Arizona State, but fell to Michigan in their season opener, the only common opponent to Denver to date.
Notes
  • The Pioneers are 21-3 as a top-10 team in the country.
  • Junior draw specialist Abby Jenkins is nine draws shy of Kiki Boone's Denver Division I career record of 225.
  • Denver's offense has combined for 11 hat tricks this season, led by five from century mark goal scorer Julia Gilbert.
  • Denver's senior class has produced 66 wins against just 10 losses in the last five years, the third most in the country in that span. The Pioneers are three wins behind BC and seven wins behind North Carolina on the list.
