DU Women’s Tennis’ Melville Falls in NCAA Round of 64

No. 91-ranked Melville drops final collegiate match to Duke’s No. 6-ranked Beck

ORLANDO – University of Denver women's tennis player and No. 91-ranked Taylor Melville ended her highly-successful 2022-23 campaign with a 6-3 6-4 loss to No. 6-ranked Chloe Beck from Duke in the round of 64 at the 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship.
 
The fifth-year student kept the first set tight, trading breaks with Beck in four consecutive games before things leveled out at 3-3. Melville faced a 0-40 deficit on her serve in the seventh game and saved the first two break points before giving a 4-3 lead to Beck. The Duke senior would close out the set with another break in the final game.
 
Melville jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the second set, saving a break point at deuce in the opening game before earning a break in the deciding point on Beck's serve in the second game. Beck got the set back on serve after breaking back in the third game before getting a taking a lead at 4-3. Melville kept the match alive with a hold at love two games later, forcing Beck to serve it out in the match's final game.
 
The Duluth, Georgia, native won 100 percent of her break opportunities in the match while denying Beck six break chances.
 
The 2023 Summit League Player of the Year concluded her final collegiate season with a 30-6 singles record on the season, making her one of just six Denver players to ever achieve the 30+ win mark in the program's Division I history – joining teammate, senior Britt Pursell, who also won 30 matches in 2022-23.
