DU Women’s Tennis Opens Dual Season Against AFA, CSU

Denver hosts first duals of the season on Saturday, Sunday at Denver Tennis Park

DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team will begin dual match play when it hosts Air Force and Colorado State on January 20-21 at Denver Tennis Park.
 
The DU vs. AFA match is set for a 1 p.m. MT start on Saturday, January 20, while DU vs. Colorado State on Sunday, January 21, will begin at 4 p.m. MT.
 
Season Preview:
Denver begins the 2024 dual season as the preseason favorite in the Summit League and will seek its 10th consecutive Summit League title.
 
Six Pioneers return to the roster in this season including 2023 Summit League Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Louise Wikander and fellow All-Summit League Team members in graduate student Britt Pursell, junior Andrea Burguete Beltran and sophomores Caroline Driscoll and Claudia Martinez de Velasco.
 
Two newcomers join the team in sophomore transfer Alice Otis and freshman Karsyn Evans. Two-time reigning Summit League Coach of the Year Paul Wardlaw leads the Pioneers for his third season.
 
Last Time Out:
Denver hosted its annual Colorado Cup on November 10-12 to finish the fall season. DU welcomed Air Force and Weber State for the weekend, finishing with a perfect 24-0 record in singles and doubles combined against both teams.
 
Pursell and Beltran qualified for the 2023 ITA National Fall Championships in doubles after winning the ITA Mountain Regional title.
 
DU concluded its 2023 season with its ninth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship where the Pioneers claimed the doubles point over No. 17 Oklahoma in the first round but ultimately fell to the Cowgirls, 4-1.
 
Series History:
Air Force: DU moved to 12-2 all-time against AFA in duals with a 5-0 win at the Air Force Academy on March 5, 2023. The Falcons made the trip to Denver for a dual most recently on March 6, 2022, in a 4-0 sweep for DU.
 
Colorado State: Denver holds a 13-4 record against CSU and has won the last seven matches. DU also hosted CSU during the 2023 season, claiming a 4-0 win on January 28. The last three duals between Denver and Colorado State have all be held in Denver with DU finishing with a 16-2 combined points record.
 
Up Next:
The University of Denver women's tennis team travels to Durham, North Carolina, for the 2024 ITA Kickoff Weekend on January 26-27. No. 3-seed DU will play No. 2-seed Auburn at 6:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. MT on January 26 before playing either No. 1-seed Duke or No. 4-seed Princeton the following day.
