DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team will hit the road for the first time in 2024 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Duke on January 26-27.
DU is the site's No. 3 seed and will first take on No. 14-ranked and No. 2-seeded Auburn on Friday, January 26, at 6:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. MT. The winner of the match will face the winner of No. 15-ranked and No. 1-seeded Duke versus No. 4 seed Princeton on Saturday. DU will play at either 4 p.m. ET/2 p.m. MT or 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT on January 27, pending the result of Friday's matches.
Last Time Out:
Denver opened its 2024 dual match season with two sweeps over in-state opponents, beginning with a 5-0 win over Air Force on January 20. The Pioneers followed it up with a 4-0 win over Colorado State on January 21.
Helping lead the way was sophomore
Louise Wikander, who was named the Summit League Peak Performer of the Week after not dropping a single game in her singles or doubles matches against AFA and then winning 6-2 in doubles with partner
Caroline Driscoll against CSU before adding a 6-2 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
Junior
Andrea Burguete Beltran captured her first win of the season in No. 1 singles against Air Force. Driscoll joined Wikander in winning both of her singles matches while sophomores
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Alice Otis each earned one singles win.
Series History:
Auburn: Denver and Auburn have only met twice previously and not since two neutral-site matches in 2017 and 2018. The Tigers earned a 4-0 sweep on February 24, 2017, before claiming a 4-1 win on February 23, 2018.
Duke: DU has never faced Duke in its Division I history.
Princeton: Denver and Princeton have met six times previously with each team claiming three wins. DU has won the last two matches, the most recently coming at Princeton at February 2, 2014 (5-2).
Up Next:
The University of Denver women's tennis team returns home for two Power-5 meetings against Kansas State and Iowa on February 2 and February 4, respectively. The February 2 match against KSU is slated for 11 a.m. MT while DU and Iowa will play at 10 a.m. MT two days later.
