Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 47-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (11-6, 3-0 Summit) dropped a neutral-site match against Wichita State on Saturday, 4-1, after finding itself with only five student-athletes available to play.
Graduate student
Britt Pursell was unable to play due to illness, leaving Denver without its No. 2 singles player and one half of its No. 1 doubles team.
Doubles:
DU only fielded two doubles teams, moving sophomore
Alice Otis to its No. 1 team alongside junior
Andra Burguete Beltran. The new duo gave WSU a run but conceded a late break to drop the match, 7-5. Denver's No. 2 doubles team of sophomores
Caroline Driscoll and
Louise Wikander also fell in their match by a single break.
Singles:
Wichita State went up 2-0 with DU's default at No. 6 singles. Driscoll took the No. 2 slot for the first time in her career but fell in straight sets. Beltran kept Denver alive with her seventh win of the season at No. 1 singles, losing just three games en route.
WSU sealed the win in two sets at No. 4 singles. Two matches were left unfinished, both with DU up a set. Wikander took her first set in a tiebreak at No. 3 singles while sophomore
Claudia Martinez de Velasco easily captured her first set, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot.
