No. 57 DU Women’s Tennis Ready for NCAA Regional Play

No. 3 seed Denver to play No. 2 seed Texas Tech in Friday’s first round

DENVER – The No. 57-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (17-6, 6-0 Summit) will open play at the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships with a first-round match against No. 25-ranked Texas Tech on Friday, May 3, at 10 a.m. PT/11 a.m. MT. The match will be hosted by UCLA.

The winner of Friday's match between No. 3 seed Denver and No. 2 seed Texas Tech will advance to the second round on Saturday against the winner of the region's other first-round match between host at No. 1 seed UCLA and No. 4 seed San Diego State.

Last Time Out:
Denver captured its 10th-consecutive Summit League title – doing so in every year since joining the league in 2013-14 – with 4-0 sweeps of Oral Roberts and South Dakota in the semifinals and final, respectively. With the win, DU remains undefeated against Summit League opponents since that 2013-14 season.

DU swept the Summit League annual awards for the second year in a row, led by junior Andrea Burguete Beltran as the Summit League Player of the Year. Sophomore transfer Alice Otis collected Summit League Newcomer of the Year honors, and head coach Paul Wardlaw was again named the Summit League Coach of the Year, winning the award in each of his first three years with Denver.

Denver's History Against the Field:
Texas Tech: DU and TTU have met seven times previously with the Red Raiders holding a 5-2 record. They most recently played on March 26, 2022, at Texas Tech in a 4-0 TTU win. Denver claimed a 4-3 road win in the meeting before that on February 17, 2020, also played at Texas Tech.

This will be the second time Denver and Texas Tech have played in the NCAA tournament after meeting in the 2017 second round (4-1 win for TTU in Lubbock, Texas). They have only once met in a neutral match, a 7-0 win for DU on February 8, 2009, at Air Force.

UCLA: If both Denver and UCLA win their respective first-round matches, Saturday's resulting second-round meeting would be just the second time the teams have played each other. Their only previous meeting also came in the NCAA tournament and also in the second round, a 4-0 win for UCLA in 2008.

San Diego State: DU and SDSU have met only one time previously, a 5-2 win for the Aztecs at home on March 17, 2011.

Denver's History in the NCAA Tournament:
This will be the 10th-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament for Denver and its 13th overall. In 2023, Denver grabbed the doubles point against Oklahoma State but ultimately fell, 4-1, in the first round.

Denver's best results in the NCAA tournament are two second-round appearances, most recently in 2017 when No. 3 seed Denver topped No. 2 seed USC, 4-2, before falling at No. 1 seed Texas Tech, 4-1. DU also advanced to the second round in 2008 after sweeping Long Beach State as the No. 3 seed in the first round before dropping a 4-0 match at No. 1-seeded UCLA.

DU made its NCAA tournament debut in 2004 in a 4-1 first-round loss to Michigan. In the team's 13 previous NCAA first-round appearances, Denver has captured at least one point in the dual six times.
