TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior captain
Maira Carreau led the Denver Pioneers triathlon team on Saturday afternoon with a fourth-place finish at the 2025 Collegiate National Championships at Tempe Town Lake.
Returning to the site where she won the 2023 individual national title, Carreau posted an overall time of 1:03:13.1 to earn a season-best result and her third consecutive top 10 at the national championships. She also claimed her third-straight first team All-American award.
Carreau stayed near the front of the pack for most of the race by posting a time of 10:23.6 in the 750-meter swim and a 33:41.7 split in the 20K bike, but she made her move in the 5K run by clocking in at 18:01.8—her quickest of the year and eighth-fastest all time in DU history. Carreau owns seven of the fastest eight 5K runs in program history.
In her final collegiate race, senior captain
Elizabeth Harita placed 41st in 1:06:26.4 (10:48.8/33:36.7/20:36.8), which included her recording the seventh-fastest bike time in the field at 33:36.7.
Freshmen
Jenna Topott (1:09:01),
Mia Stanley-Hunt (1:09:18) and
Lucrezia Gowdy (1:09:52) all finished within a minute of one another, with Topott in 57th, Stanley-Hunt in 59th and Gowdy coming in 61st. Fellow rookie
Olivia Wimberger raced earlier in the day in the B wave and posted a time of 1:14.57 to place 109th overall.
The University of Arizona repeated as team national champions, with Kelly Wetteland of U of A taking the individual national title to complete the season sweep; she won each of the Wildcats' five races during the year. Arizona teammate Margareta Vrablova was second and Queens University of Charlotte's Beth Cook was third, coming in about 35 seconds ahead of Carreau.
Host Arizona State finished second behind Arizona (927) with 900 points, while Texas Christian University was third with 843 points. Queens was fourth with 821 points and South Dakota placed in fifth with 767 points.
The Pioneers garnered 733 points to finish seventh among Division-I squads in the team standings and ninth overall.
Lenoir-Rhyne won the Division-II team national championship while North Central College won the D-III team title. Zoila Sicilia of LRU took the D-III individual national championship while placing 11th overall, and Bethany Smeed of NCC was the top Division-III finisher (64th overall).
WHAT'S NEXT: The primary fall season is now over, and the Pioneers will rest and recover. The athletes will primarily focus on individual training sessions during the upcoming holiday break before group practices resume after the New Year in preparation for several spring events.
THE COURSE: Beginning with an in-water start off North Shore Beach of Tempe Town Lake, the athletes began the race with a one-lap swim of 750 meters. After swimming straight out, they made a sharp right at the first buoy to begin forming a rectangular course. The 20-kilometer bike route included three laps around the proximity of the lake and featured several long straightaways, L-turns and two tight U-turns. The 5-kilometer run was on the north side of the lake, heading west out of transition to form a straight, two-loop out-and-back course.
WEATHER: It was sunny conditions with little-to-no shade on the course. The air temperature at the 12:45 p.m. MT start for the B wave was 80 degrees Fahrenheit but conditions made it feel closer to 85 degrees. The championship C wave had a temperature of 83 degrees and a feel-like temperature of 87 degrees, but the UV index was low.
