SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Denver women's triathlon team kicked off the 2026 spring season with two days of races at 2026 Tritonman this weekend.
Junior
Maira Carreau won the draft-legal triathlon on Saturday at San Diego's Mission Bay and Fiesta Island, while freshman
Lucrezia Gowdy claimed her first career victory by winning the non-draft-legal race to conclude the meet on Sunday.
Carreau finished first for the fourth time in her collegiate career as she posted a total time of 1:03:30, beating Arizona State's Liberty Ricca in second place by 42 seconds (1:04:12).
Gowdy was Denver's second finisher on Saturday in fifth place before her first win on Sunday where she posted a time of 1:07:15 in the non-draft-legal and finished six seconds ahead of second-place Siwen Cui.
The Pioneers had four of their athletes finish in the top 10 of the leaderboard on Day 1 as freshman
Jenna Topott came in sixth (1:07:56) while fellow classmate
Mia Stanley-Hunt recorded a season best and first collegiate top 10 in eighth (1:08:21). Rookie
Olivia Wimberger also had a season high with a 26th-place result (1:12:47).
Topott joined Gowdy in racing in Sunday's non-draft-legal event and capped off her season with her third top 10 of the campaign in eighth (1:11:06).
The course began with an open water start where the competitors swam 750 meters in a rectangular shape in Pacific Passage of the Mission Bay, right off the Tecolote Shores park. The athletes than transitioned at the park for a three-lap bike segment around nearby Fiesta Island that totaled 21 kilometers. The final leg was a three-lap run of 5 kilometers around Tecolote Shores park.
