No. 14 Denver Tops Stanford, 12-8

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) scored four goals and tallied an assist, as No. 14 Denver opened MPSF conference play with a 12-8 victory over Stanford on Friday night.

 

Denver (11-2, 1-0) opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal by freshman Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.). The Cardinal (4-7, 1-2) responded with a pair of scores.

 

Coyne, senior midfielder Kristie Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) put Denver in front with a trio of goals over a 10-minute span.

 

Junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) and Coyne each scored in the final six minutes of the first half, as DU headed into the locker room with a 6-4 lead.

 

Sanders opened the second half with another goal, but Stanford answered 30 seconds later.

 

Coyne, Leggio and sophomore Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) broke the game open with three unanswered goals, and Morton scored again after the Cardinal put another point on the board.

 

Stanford scored twice more before Coyne iced the game in the final minutes.

 

Denver continues its West Coast swing at UC-Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
