Denver Breaks 200 Breast and 400 Free Relay School Records

Sanes broke his own 200 breast record, one of three individual event wins for the Pioneers on Sunday

PRINCETON, N.J. – A trio of juniors in Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas), Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) and Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.) all recorded individual event wins, while Denver broke its third relay school record of the weekend, this time snapping the 400 free mark, on the final night of competition at the 2019 Big Al Open on Sunday at Denunzio Pool.

Sanes broke his own school record in the 200 breast on Sunday night, swimming the event 0.29 seconds faster than his performance in the 2018 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships. A few events later, Auchinachie, redshirt-junior Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.), senior Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) and Sanes swam the 400 free relay in 2:51.99, 0.45 seconds faster than Auchinachie, Stephen Calkins, Ray Bornman and Farber swam the event at the 2018 NCAA Championships.

Senior Andi Johnston (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished sixth with a 16:50.79, while sophomore Angie Lindsay (Beaverton, Ore.) took 10th with a 17:09.62.

On the men's side, with distance specialist Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) at the U.S. Open, Denver turned to freshman Riley Babson (Vail, Ariz.) and senior Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) to lead the Pioneers distance effort. Babson took fourth with an NCAA B Standard time of 15:21.73, improving on his previous mile time by nearly 45 seconds. Haraden finished fifth with a 15:24.87, also good enough for an NCAA B Standard. Junior Nathan Rock (Boulder, Colo.) improved on his personal best by nearly 15 seconds to take 14th.

Following the distance swims, freshman Sofia Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) finished fourth and sophomore Natalie Arky (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished seventh in the 200 back with times of 1:57.24 and 2:00.79, respectively. For the men's backstroke, senior Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) clocked in at 1:48.16 to finish fifth.

Junior Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) took 14th in the 100 free with a time of 51.07 to take 14th, the lone Pioneer scorer in the event.

Denver's men's freestylers watched Farber jump up a spot from this morning's prelims to take second, 0.38 seconds behind Auchinachie. Both swimmers broke 43 seconds in the final. Auchinachie swam it in 42.54 while Farber finished in 42.92, both of which were NCAA B Standard times. In the B-Final, Sykes reached the wall in 12th (44.74), sophomore Darragh Mahns (Missoula, Mont.) finished 15th (45.33) and freshman Spencer Adrian (Portland, Ore.) touched in 16th (45.34).

Simon picked up the Denver women's program's first event win of the weekend, taking first in the 200 breast on Sunday night with a 2:14.20. Junior Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) dropped nearly two seconds off her prelim time to take fourth in 2:17.95, while junior Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) finished sixth in 2:18.49 and sophomore Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.) finished seventh with a 2:19.13. In the B-Final, freshman Sophia Bricker (Colorado Springs, Colo.) touched the wall in 13th in 2:22.19.

In addition to Sanes' school record 200 breast time of 1:55.95, Denver's men got points in the 200 breast from junior Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.), who took 11th with a 2:01.27 and junior Cy Jager (Moscow, Idaho), who finished 15th with a 2:02.78.

Senior Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) shaved 0.19 seconds off her prelim time from this morning's 200 fly to climb up to second in the finals on Sunday night with a 1:58.62. Senior Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) finished eighth in the final with a 2:00.39, while junior Uma Knaven (Chapel Hill, N.C.) reached the final wall in 2:06.07 to take 16th. Sophomore David Mihalic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) was the lone point scorer for the Denver men in the 200 fly with his 1:48.51. Mihalic improved his 200 fly time by 1.99 seconds from this morning's prelims.

Denver's women closed out its weekend with a fourth place finish in the 400 free relay with Valette, freshman Erika Remington (Cedarburg, Wis.), senior Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Leckie completing the race in 3:22.85.
