Denver Hosts Butler for BIG EAST Opener

Caroline Wiseman, Eliza Radochonski and Kayla DeRose netted hat tricks in Denver's 14-10 win against San Diego State on Friday, March 12 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Denver raced out to a 6-0 lead and held onto that advantage with a staunch defensive effort that saw the Pioneers win the turnover battle, 22-11. The Crimson & Gold improved to 12-1 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in the last three seasons.  
 
Series History
The Pioneers are 3-0 all-time vs. Butler, outscoring the Bulldogs 52-9 in those games.The teams previously played in 2017, 2018 & 2019. They were scheduled to play in 2020 before the season was canceled.

  • Radochonski has a team-leading 12 points on 11 goals and one assist. She scored twice vs. Colorado on Feb. 28, recorded her second-career sock trick vs. Arizona State on March 7 and had a hat trick vs. San Diego State on March 12
  • Molly Little was named BIG EAST Defender of the Week after anchoring a defense that forced 22 turnovers and allowed only 25 shots in a 14-10 win against San Diego State. The Tiverton, R.I. native posted four draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover in the victory. Denver finished 21-of-23 on clears, including a perfect 5-for-5 in the second half. Kayla DeRose was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. DeRose was one of three Pioneers with hat tricks vs. the Aztecs, joining Eliza Radochonski & Caroline Wiseman. Denver has had back-to-back BIG EAST Players of the Week and BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honorees with Eliza Radochonski & Sam Thacker receiving recognition on March 8
  • For the second straight year, Molly Little was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The grad student defender has 26 goals, 14 assists, 171 draw controls, 59 ground balls and 49 caused turnovers in 50 career games. She has one goal, 12 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in three games this season. She was named BIG EAST Preseason Defender of the Year and selected for the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
  • Bea Behrins had four goals in Denver's last meeting with Butler, a 16-5 win against the Bulldogs on April 13, 2019. Amelia Cole made three saves in 12:35 of action
  • Little, Radochonski and senior Sammie Morton are captains for the 2021 season
  • The Pioneers had a conference-leading six student-athletes named Preseason All-BIG EAST: Bea Behrins, Quintin Hoch-Bullen, Liddy, Little, Radochonski and Caroline Wiseman. Hoch-Bullen was named BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Little was named BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
  • Little and Hoch-Bullen earned Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America honors for the second straight year
  • Liza Kelly has a 182-72 all-time record in her 15th season as DU's head coach
  • Denver was picked 1st in the BIG EAST women's lacrosse preseason coaches' poll
  • The Pioneers outscored opponents 135-69 last season and ranked 5th in the country in caused turnovers per game (12.5). Individually, Thacker Denver with 13 caused turnovers while Hoch-Bullen led the Pioneers in scoring with 33 goals, 44 points and seven hat tricks
  • Denver had the second-ranked scoring defense in the country en-route to the 2019 BIG EAST regular season title, holding the opposition to 7.3 goals per game. The Pioneers went 16-4 that season and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal for the first time in program history 
  • Little was invited to a U.S. team tryout for the 2021 Women's World Championship and assistant coach Brittany Read was named to England's training squad for the championship, which was later postponed
