DENVER – Two University of Denver triathletes are set to race internationally this weekend as sophomores
Freya McKinley and
Clara Normand will be competing at the Pan American Junior Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay.
McKinley, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, will wear the United States kit for the second time in her career, while the Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, native Normand will don the maple leaf for Team Canada.
The women's junior championship begins at 7 a.m. local time on Saturday at Ramirez Beach in Montevideo and will be a sprint distance race. McKinley and Normand will also be available to compete in the mixed relay on Sunday at 1 p.m. local time.
Normand has competed in nine previous international events and placed sixth at last year's junior championships in St. George, Utah. Normand came in 24th in June at the World Triathlon Junior Championship in her hometown of Montreal, while McKinley finished 28th in the same race—her international debut.
McKinley has recorded top-10 results in all three full triathlons this season, including winning the Southern Hills Triathlon on Sept. 3 in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Normand has two top-10 finishes in fall 2022, including coming in second behind McKinley at Southern Hills and placing sixth at the Oktoberfest Sprint on Sept. 24.
While the two Pioneers will be in South America, the rest of the Denver tri team will be competing in Berkeley, California, at the Bearathlon this weekend. The Sunday morning race, hosted by the University of California's club team, will be the final regular season meet of the year for DU before the Collegiate National Championships on Nov. 12 in Tempe, Arizona.
