CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Denver women's triathlon team began its spring campaign on Saturday morning at the 2024 Clermont Challenge at Lake Louisa State Park.
The Pioneers traveled to the outskirts of Orlando for the fourth-straight spring and had six triathletes race on Saturday in a two-day competition that features six different men's, women's and coed events each day.
Freshman and defending Division-I national champion
Maira Carreau led DU by placing second in the under-25 National Development Race and junior
Olivia Ebenstein was right behind her in fifth.
Carreau clocked in with a total time of 1:03:05, with only Jimena De La Pena of Mexico finishing with a better time at 1:02:58 to earn the individual victory. The La Prairie, Quebec, native was the second athlete out of the water with a split of 10:18 and posted the fourth-fastest run in the field by finishing the 5-kilometer course in 18:47.
Ebenstein picked up her second career top-five finish with a time of 1:03:48. It was her best result in a collegiate competition since coming in fourth at the 2021 Oktoberfest Spring in Longmont, Colorado.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Harita used the second-quickest bike split to come in 12th (1:04:19). Junior
Avarie Faulkner was 42nd (1:07:52) and sophomore
Coco Diemar was 50th (1:08:39).
The National Development Race featured the standard college distance with a 750-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run. The bike (four laps) and run (two laps) featured a fast, out-and-back course.
Graduate student
Maren York took part in Saturday's NCAA Super Sprint race and finished 12th with a time of 34:52. The split distances were half of the NDR sprint with a 375-meter swim, 10K bike and 2.5K run.
No team scores are being recorded this weekend. Conditions in the morning races featured temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s and cloudy conditions.
Several Pioneers are expected to race on back-to-back days on Sunday in either the National Development Race or in the NCAA Super Sprint to wrap up the Clermont Challenge and DU's official spring campaign.
