Maira Carreau Places in Top 20 in World Triathlon Cup in Spain

Denver sophomore was the second-highest finisher age 21 or younger

DENVER Sophomore Maira Carreau of the Denver Pioneers triathlon team placed 19th on Saturday at the World Triathlon Cup race in Valencia, Spain.
 
Carreau was the fourth-highest finisher from North America in the race was among the youngest in the field. She was the second-highest finisher age 21 or younger, as only fellow 2003-birthyear Jules Behrens of Germany placed higher in eighth place.
 
A native of La Prairie, Quebec, Canada, Carreau recorded a total time of 56:57 in the sprint-distance event at Marina Real de Valencia. She was middle of the pack in all three legs of a race that saw 39-of-42 competitors finish, posting a time of 9:54 in the 750-meter swim, 28:20 in the 19.2-kilometer bike and 17:50 in the 5K run.
 
Lisa Tertsch of Germany (born 1998) won the race in 55:09. The top North American finisher was fellow Canadian Emy Legault in 11th (56:16).
 
The World Triathlon Cup is an annual series of triathlon races staged around the world and is organized by World Triathlon. The Valencia race was the 10th of 17 events on the 2024 schedule.
 
Carreau and the rest of DU's triathlon team continues their regular season on Sunday, Sept. 29 with the Battle in the Fort Collegiate Cup in Fort Worth, Texas. Western Regionals are set for Oct. 12 and the Collegiate National Championships are Nov. 9.
